A project to renovate a much-loved community centre in the Outer Hebrides has won the backing of leading cable management manufacturer Marshall-Tufflex, which has donated product for the initiative.

The Lewis Retirement Centre in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis is used by thousands of islanders each year, from members of mum and baby groups to an art club, the RNLI, pensioners’ groups and various support and social organisations.

The centre, self-funding and run by a voluntary committee, was desperately in need of repair and updating to make it more functional and allow more people to use it, hence the renovation project, which is featuring on the BBC’s ALBA series 'DIY le Donnie’ in September.

Marshall-Tufflex has supplied Sterling Profile 1 and two gang accessory boxes through Medlock Electrical Distributors in Stornoway to assist with the renovation. Company Marketing Manager Katie Barnes said: “We are absolutely delighted to support this worthwhile project. The retirement centre provides a really important meeting place for all ages in Stornoway and is particularly valued for the assistance it provides to the island’s older population. It was desperately in need of updating and enlarging and we were only too pleased to help.”

Sussex-based Marshall-Tufflex, which is this year celebrating its 75th year in business, is an established charity supporter. From 2007 to 2017 alone it donated more than £750,000 to charitable organisations. The company prides itself on the fact that each time a Marshall-Tufflex cable management product is sold, a charity and its UK-based workforce is supported.

DIY Le Donnie is BBC Alba’s renovation and building series. The Lewis Retirement Centre will feature in special episodes due to be aired in September with presenter Donnie Macleod working with local suppliers and the building community on the Isle of Lewis to undertake the renovation in one week.

The episodes will broadcast on four consecutive nights at 8.30pm, starting on Monday, September 18th and finishing on Thursday, September 21st. BBC ALBA is available on Sky 143 (UK); Freeview/You View 8 (Scotland only); Virgin Media 161 (UK); Freesat 110 (UK); BT Vision 8 (Scotland only). It also broadcasts live on the BBC iPlayer and all the programmes will remain online for 30 days.
