Unitrunk Makes Substantial Investment in Capacity Enhancing Automation

Cable management specialist, Unitrunk, has made a substantial investment in the future growth and agility of its manufacturing capabilities with the installation of a new state-of-the-art automated manufacturing system.

Unitrunk’s production facility in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, is home to the company’s manufacturing capabilities for its Rapid Installation Systems (RIS) UniKlip cable tray and EasyConnect cable basket, along with production of Unitrunk trunking, channel and accessories. The company has embraced automation and lean manufacturing practices for a number of years and its latest investment will increase capacity at the site significantly enabling even more rapid response to orders, allowing custom requirements to be met even on short lead times.

The operations team at Unitrunk carried out a thorough review process and scoured the production automation sector before opting for an AMADA system that integrates all processes from management of materials through to completion of the finished item. The system enables continuous operation at the plant, even during ‘lights out’ off shift hours and also ensures changeovers between different processes, materials and sizes are swift and automatic, taking just two or three minutes with no additional labour requirements.

Explains Unitrunk’s managing director David Morrow, “In a competitive sector and a global marketplace, it’s vital to serve the customer with rapid turnaround and a flexible approach to meeting their specific requirements, without compromising on quality.

“Our investment in automation means that our production schedules automatically adjust aligned to stock levels so that all six of our distribution depots across the UK – in Livingston, Durham, Manchester, Wolverhampton, Bristol and Harlow – are always able to meet supply requirements. Indeed, we can customise the stockholding at each depot aligned to regional trends and adjust production in Lisburn accordingly.

Unitrunk is now in the process of programming the new system, which is scalable to meet the needs of the business. The investment is set to drive growth at the £multi-million company, which has seen its turnover increase year on year.

David adds: “Our growth over the past decade has been driven through production efficiency on the shop floor and our latest investment in manufacturing automation will enable us to dramatically increase capacity and responsiveness without any additional labour costs or extension of the existing plant.

“We are known as innovators in cable management design and that philosophy extends to operational excellence, as evidenced by our willingness to invest profits back into the business as part of a process of continuous improvement.”
