Airedale WISE Women Choose STEM

Airedale International welcomes over thirty, 11-14-year-old girls for an evening of inspiration and opportunity delivered by Airedale’s female engineers.

On the evening of Wednesday, 7 November 2017, Airedale International Air Conditioning hosted two groups of schoolgirls, aged between 11 and 14 years, from Woodkirk Academy (Wakefield), and Dixons Allerton Academy (Bradford).

The evening included a tour of Airedale's manufacturing facility, explaining the processes involved in creating and exporting world-class cooling products. Following the tour, the girls listened to presentations from leading female engineers, including Sue Eversley (mechanical engineer and applications team leader), Rinku Patel (computational fluid dynamics and mechanical design engineer), and Ellie Hall (controls engineer and software developer).

The evening took place in collaboration with the WISE campaign, who in partnership with Leeds City Council, is running a campaign for gender balance in science, technology and engineering throughout the region.

Through organising events such as this, WISE aims to inspire the next wave of women to pursue a career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related fields. The aim is to give young girls the opportunity to see first-hand what it is like to work in the STEM sector and to speak with female engineers with diverse careers and backgrounds.

Airedale chose to get involved with the campaign, as it recognises the importance of getting more girls into engineering. They are committed to promoting the opportunities in engineering, locally, nationally and internationally, making careers in STEM open and accessible to all.
